Welcome to Pack 580

St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Chula Vista, California 91910

Cub Scouting means “doing.” Everything in Cub Scouting is designed to have the boys doing things. Activities are used to achieve the aims of Scouting—citizenship training, character development, and personal fitness.

Many of the activities happen right in the den and pack, so it is important to attend the weekly den meetings and the monthly pack meeting.

Apart from the fun and excitement of Cub Scout activities, the Cub Scout Promise, the Law of the Pack, and the Cub Scout sign, handshake, motto, and salute all teach good citizenship and contribute to a boy's sense of belonging.

“The spirit is there in every boy; it has to be discovered and brought to light.”

Lord Robert Baden-Powell

Cub Scouting -- A Parent's Call to Action

"There is a battle of significant consequence taking place in the lives of boys in America today. In simple terms, it is the battle between doing what is right or wrong. A recent study conducted by Louis Harris & Associates indicates that the proportion of boys choosing to do what is wrong is alarmingly high. Even basic values such as not cheating on schoolwork and not stealing seem to be unstable.

Clearly, the results of this study indicate that our nation's youth are struggling with ethical and moral decisions, and that these difficulties can only increase with age. Therefore, the need for reinforcing and rewarding strong moral standards and providing positive role models at a young age is more important than ever before.

Cub Scouting creates a climate of cooperative and collaborative relationships between adults and children--a laboratory for adults and children to get to know one another. It provides opportunities for children to acquire the capacity for accomplishment. The program affirms to the child that the world really is an interesting place.

Cub Scouting is fun! But it is fun with a purpose. Woven though all the fun is an inspired program that really works. Tried and proven methods are used that transfer traditional values, build character, and develop leadership skills -- all in the context of fun and family togetherness."
(BSA: Operation Tiger Mania 1996)

The Purposes of Cub Scouting

Since 1930, the Boy Scouts of America has helped younger boys through Cub Scouting. It is a year-round family program designed for boys who are in the first grade through fifth grade (or 7, 8, 9, and 10 years of age). Parents, leaders, and organizations work together to achieve the purposes of Cub Scouting. Currently, Cub Scouting is the largest of the BSA's three membership divisions. (The others are Boy Scouting and Venturing.)

The ten purposes of Cub Scouting are:

1.    Character Development

2.    Spiritual Growth

3.    Good Citizenship

4.    Sportsmanship and Fitness

5.    Family Understanding

6.    Respectful Relationships

7.    Personal Achievement

8.    Friendly Service

9.    Fun and Adventure

10.  Preparation for Boy Scouts

Core value for May is:

Health and Fitness:

Being personally committed to keeping our minds and bodies clean and fit.

Cub Scouts will learn that it is important and easy to eat a healthy diet and how a fitness program can be part of their daily routine.

Tiger Cub Promise

I promise to love God, my family, and my country, and to learn about the world.

The National Cub Scouting Character Connections Program was introduced in 2002. The key elements of the program are 12 core values, several of which relate directly to points in the Scout Law. The character-building process is called Character Connections, which connects the values to the activities and advancement of Cub and Webelos Scouts.

The Cub Scouting Character Connections Program identifies 12 core values which are incorporated into the advancement requirements for the Tiger Cub, Wolf, Bear, Webelos, and Arrow of Light ranks, as well as the Webelos Activity Badges. Boys are encouraged to "KNOW," "COMMIT," and "PRACTICE" each Core Value as follows:

1. Citizenship: Contributing service and showing responsibility to local, state, and national communities.

2. Compassion: Being kind and considerate, and showing concern for the well-being of others.

3. Cooperation: Being helpful and working together with others toward a common goal.

4. Courage: Being brave and doing what is right regardless of our fears, the difficulties, or the consequences.

5. Faith: Having inner strength and confidence based on our trust in God.

6. Health and Fitness: Being personally committed to keeping our minds and bodies clean and fit.

7. Honesty: Telling the truth and being worthy of trust.

8. Perseverance: Sticking with something and not giving up, even if it is difficult.

9. Positive Attitude: Being cheerful and setting our minds to look for and find the best in all situations.

10. Resourcefulness: Using human and other resources to their fullest.

11. Respect: Showing regard for the worth of something or someone.

12. Responsibility: Fulfilling our duty to God, country, other people, and ourselves.

Cub Scout Colors

The Cub Scouting colors are blue and gold. They have special meaning, which will help boys see beyond the fun of Cub Scouting to its ultimate goals.

· The blue stands for truth and spirituality, steadfast loyalty, and the sky above.

· The gold stands for warm sunlight, good cheer, and happiness.
